Holotable/Holodeck FAQ

I tried to log on to the central server, and it told me it required authentication. What's going on?

Because some immature people have started impersonating others (and insulting them, losing games on purpose, etc.), it was necessary to implement a system so that people would know who they were actually talking to/playing. Therefore, you must use your username and password from the forums on this site in order to log on to a server that requires authentication.

I've installed GTK and Holotable, but whenever I try to run it I get errors like "Could not find entry point 'gdk_pixbuf_new_from_file_utf8' in libgdkpixbuf.dll".

This is generally due to having old GTK DLLs lying around on your system. You must remove these or get your system to look at the new ones first (by manipulating your PATH environment variable). However, if the old DLLs are in your Windows\System32 directory, you will be forced to delete them or else hand copy all the required DLLs into your Holotable installation directory.

Whenever I try to run Holotable or Holodeck, it tells me it can't find "intl.dll" and won't run. I've reinstalled and it still doesn't work. What's wrong?

You must have GTK installed in order to run Holotable and Holodeck. This file is part of GTK, and if it can't be found, neither program will run. Go to the Downloads & Links page to find the link to get GTK.

I use the Linux version of Holotable, and sometimes I don't see images for the other player's cards. What's going on?

This generally indicates that whoever you're playing against is using a deck that was created before Virtual Set 10. Before the Virtual Set 10 update to the CDF file, the card images were referenced with mixed case, so anything created pre-V10 could cause this problem. Linux is case-sensitive, and Windows is not. So your opponent wouldn't have any idea that his deck is causing you a problem. You can ask your opponent to rebuild his deck from a post-V10 CDF to fix it.

Why does Holotable use so much memory? (updated)

The main reason that memory usage was an issue was a memory leak in versions prior to 0.5.0. The leak was in code relating to use of the large images, so the leaks added up over the course of a game, giving people low memory errors and causing crashes.

Why can't I see large card images even when I choose image "zoom"?

Generally this happens when you haven't downloaded and installed the large images. They come in a separate download because they are over 200MB.

I was playing a game, and the card images weren't right. What happened?

It is extremely important that decks be loaded separately. One player should load his deck, then the other should load his after the first deck has finished loading for both players. You should confirm that the number of cards loaded for your opponent is the same as the number loaded for you.

If you don't ensure that the decks load without "overlapping", you could end up having a card be different for your opponent. For example, to you it would be Ben Kenobi, but to your opponent it might be Sense. If Holotable hasn't crashed on either of you by the time you notice this (it may well have already done so), you should clear the table (Table->Clear All) and load your decks again.

I'm using Windows 98/ME. Why won't Holotable/Holodeck run?

There seem to be problems with GTK on Windows 98/ME. I have personally been successful in making both Holotable and Holodeck run under Windows 98 (Second Edition), so it can be done. Please post in the forums if you're having trouble, and I'll try to help figure out what's going on.

Why doesn't Holotable have <insert desired feature here>?

Most likely because you haven't read the readme file (available online in addition to being in the install) and don't know how to use it or because I haven't programmed it to have that feature yet. Remember that I'm doing this on my own time for the benefit of you. I intend to make upgrades and add features that the largest number of people will find useful or enjoyable. Feel free to make suggestions on things to add. However, don't suggest that I make Holotable automatically know all the rules and prevent people from cheating, automatically calculate battle results, etc. That would be nigh unto impossible.
